20-Minute Sticky Sesame Tofu

If you think tofu is bland, this is the recipe to change your mind. Cubes of firm tofu are coated in cornflour and pan-fried until crisp, then tossed in a sticky, glossy sesame sauce.

The sauce is soy sauce, honey, rice vinegar, garlic and sesame oil, all straight from the pantry. It thickens in seconds and clings to every crunchy edge.

Serve with rice and steamed greens. Use maple syrup instead of honey to make it vegan.

Ingredients

  • 450g firm tofu, drained and patted dry
  • 3 tbsp cornflour
  • 3 tbsp neutral oil
  • 2 garlic cloves, finely chopped
  • Sauce: 3 tbsp soy sauce, 2 tbsp honey or maple syrup, 1 tbsp rice vinegar, 1 tsp sesame oil, 1 tsp sriracha (optional), 3 tbsp water, 1 tsp cornflour
  • 1 tbsp toasted sesame seeds
  • 2 spring onions, sliced
  • Steamed rice and greens, to serve

Instructions

  1. Press the tofu between paper towels to remove excess water, then cut into 2cm cubes and toss with the cornflour.
  2. Whisk the sauce ingredients together.
  3. Heat the oil in a large non-stick frying pan over medium-high heat. Fry the tofu for 8-10 minutes, turning, until golden and crisp on all sides.
  4. Push the tofu to one side, add the garlic and cook for 20 seconds, then pour in the sauce.
  5. Toss for 1-2 minutes until the sauce is thick and coats the tofu. Sprinkle with sesame seeds and spring onion and serve with rice and greens.
